What Happened to the Sephardic Route
Since 2015, descendants of Portuguese Sephardic Jews could apply for Portuguese nationality by naturalisation, supported by proof of Sephardic origin and belonging, usually through a certificate from a recognised Jewish community. The route was tightened in 2022 and again in 2024, and then repealed in 2026.

I Already Filed: What Happens to My Application?
The transitional rule in Organic Law 1/2026 (article 7(2)) provides that procedures already pending on 19 May 2026 continue under the previous wording of the Nationality Law. The new general rules, such as longer residence periods and new language and civic requirements, are not meant to be applied to those files.
Likely protected
- An application actually submitted to the Portuguese authorities before 19 May 2026.
- A file that appears on the Nationality Portal as submitted, under analysis, for decision or concluded.
Generally not enough
- Collecting documents without filing.
- Holding a community certificate but no submitted application.
- An intention to apply, or a booked appointment that did not result in a filing.

Identify your regime
Your filing date determines the requirements: before or after 1 September 2022, and before or after the 2024 reform.
Answer every notice
Requests for documents or clarification carry deadlines. A missed reply can stall or sink a file that was otherwise sound.
My Application Has Been Pending for Years
Sephardic files have been among the slowest in the Portuguese nationality system. The administration has a legal duty to decide within a reasonable time, but delay alone does not automatically create a right to court action. Each case needs an assessment.

No firm can honestly promise a decision date. Court action is a legal strategy with costs and risks, not a guaranteed shortcut.
Refusals and Appeals
Sephardic nationality was granted by decision of the Minister of Justice, and refusals have occurred. Before deciding anything, work out exactly what kind of document you received. The remedy depends on it.
Proposed refusal or request for documents
This is usually a chance to respond, with a short deadline stated in the notice. A well-argued reply with supporting evidence can change the outcome. Do not ignore it.
Final refusal
A final decision may be challenged before the administrative courts. Time limits for court action are limited, commonly counted in months, so seek advice promptly and confirm the deadline against your notice.

- Whether the correct regime for your filing date was applied.
- Whether the stated grounds (for example, belonging, effective connection, or residence) match the evidence you submitted.
- Whether procedural rights were respected, including the right to be heard before a refusal.
- Whether a different route, such as descent or marriage, is a better path than litigation.
Keep every document
Keep the notice, the envelope or email with its date, and proof of what you submitted. Dates decide whether a remedy is still available.
Other Routes to Portuguese Citizenship
If you have not filed, the Sephardic route cannot be reopened for you. But Sephardic families often have other Portuguese links. These are separate routes, not continuations of the repealed one, and each has its own conditions.

First confirm the status on the official Nationality Portal and check whether any request or notice from the Registry went unanswered. If the delay is unjustified, a court action to compel a decision may be possible. The court can order the administration to decide, but it cannot grant nationality itself, and no outcome is guaranteed.
My Sephardic application was refused. Can I appeal?
Possibly. The first step is to identify exactly what you received: a proposed refusal, which usually allows a short window to respond, or a final decision, which may be challenged before the administrative courts within a limited period. Deadlines are short, so keep the notice and seek advice quickly.
I missed the deadline. Is there another way through my Sephardic ancestry?
The Sephardic route itself is closed, but other routes may exist if you also descend from a Portuguese citizen: attribution through a Portuguese parent or grandparent, naturalisation for great-grandchildren with legal residence in Portugal, marriage or de facto partnership, or naturalisation by residence. Each has its own requirements.
Can great-grandchildren of Portuguese citizens apply?

Does the Jewish community certificate still help?
For a file already pending, the certificate remains part of the evidence. For people who have not filed, a certificate alone no longer opens the route, because the Sephardic ground for new applications was repealed on 19 May 2026.
